"The Dispatch Process"
What is a Freight Dispatcher?
Dispatchers represent the carrier in a freight transaction. They take a percentage off the carrier’s negotiated rate, so they are motivated to find carriers high paying freight. The higher the rate they can find for the carrier, the more money they make. Good dispatchers will keep portfolios with their carrier’s lane preferences, desired freight rates, and equipment specifications. Using this information, the Dispatcher then contacts the shippers or freight broker on the carrier’s behalf to negotiate loads that meet the carrier’s requirements. Only after a load is agreed upon does the dispatcher charge the carrier a fee for the service on the carrier's total gross revenue of the load and that fee can vary from 10% to 15%.
How It Works.
ABC Paper (who is the shipper) needs paper shipped from their location In Chicago.IL. To Paper International Headquarters in St. Louis, MO.
ABC Paper contact a broker and offers $1400 to get the paper shipped.
The broker then puts the load info out for bid, at that point you will be able to call and make an offer on the load. You won’t know the broker received $1400 to get the load moved, but you will know how much you will need for you client (trucking company) to move the load. How will you know what your client needs to move the load? Because at the time the carrier signed on with you, the carrier will give you all his or hers required terms to move the truck.
Let’s say the broker has listed the load, for let's say $1200 on 520 miles, that’s $2.30 a mile. You then call the broker about the load and tell them you have a truck for that load, all of the carrier paperwork checks out and your carrier accepts the load from you. Once, the load is dropped and the B.O.L. is received you can begin the billing process to the carrier (10% to 15% of the total gross revenue of the load or $120 to $180). Multiply that by the number of trucks you dispatch and hopefully now, you can start to see the potential of this business. That's the dispatch process.
